Description
Due to the lack of trained engineers during World War I the War Department’s Committee on Education and Special Training selected Stevens as the site for the country’s only Navy Steam Engineering School. Under the direction of Lt. Commander Frederick L. Pryor, Stevens class of 1897, the School was designed to train young men as naval engineers who would operate the growing number of Navy vessels deployed around the globe. This letter from the Secretary of the Navy at the time, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is thanking Stevens and President Humphreys for their great contribution to the war effort.
